Katâs and Marthaâs mouths began to water. âIâm pretty sure that means peanut butter,â Martha said excitedly.
âAnd to drink,â Snowpea finished, âIâve made us each a delectable sardini martini. Cheers to a perfect night!â
âCheers!â said the guests.
Katharina took one lick of the bonito-flake salad, and the fishy flavor was so enticing that she swallowed it whole. Snowpea shot her a stern look as she licked her lips, and Kat whimpered.
Martha tried her best to eat one small piece at a time, but her appetizer and main course quickly vanished. Fortunately, the guests seemed focused on their own meals and unbothered by the puppiesâ poor manners.
âIf I may,â Snowpea began, wanting to strike up a polite conversation and distract from the puppies. âIâd love to hear about your experience ruling over such a vast territory. Thus far, we only know of life in this small foster room.â
Coco licked the pâté from her lips and began. âOur forever home is a lovely one, with many rooms over which we are fortunate to rule. Itâs a great privilege to have visitors of many species pass by our borders.â She looked at the puppies and smiled. âOf course, it is the ultimate journey for each of you little fosters to someday have your own forever homeâyour own Foreverland. All in due time!â
Snowpea nodded. âA great honor it will be to discover our future Foreverlands! And weâve been practicing our royal ways, havenât we?â The puppies nodded, drooling as they eyed dessert.
âBut remember,â Coco cautioned, âFosterland isnât just where you strive to find your homeâitâs where you strive to find yourself. So cherish these youthful moments of friendship and self-discovery, stay true to who you are, and most importantly: donât take life too seriously. Youâve got the rest of your life to be grown.â
The puppies listened to her words of wisdom, their tails wagging. Taking her advice, Kat scooped a bit of peanut butter under her claw and flung it at her sister. Splat! It hit Martha on the nose, and she began licking the sweet treat over and over.
Kat checked on Cocoâs face, which had cracked a small smile, then looked back at her sister. âYou look so silly.â Kat laughed, and Martha flung peanut butter back at her until both of them were licking away.
âUm, puppies?â Snowpeaâs voice shook as she tried to smooth things over. âFood is for eating, not playing.â¦â
They licked and licked and licked, their tongues seeming to be stuck in the âonâ position, and the more they licked, the more they started to laugh. Eloise giggled quietly, and Haroun let out a tiny chuckle. Cocoâs face bore a soft grin, and again she said, âCherish these moments!â
âBut this isnât funny,â Snowpea said as more peanut butter went flying, and the catsâ laughs got louder. âThis isnât how we behave! Knock it off!â
But it was too lateâthe puppies were having a giggle fit, and she had lost all control of them. Soon a food fight had broken out between Martha
